This video kind of nails it on the head about why I have changed our eating habits. As a society, we need to get back to good ole' home cookin! It is what is best. And I don't mean "home cookin" as in hamburger helper or something from a can that can be whipped up in 15 minutes. Speedy home cooking isn't quality food. Cook real food! Trust me! It's delicious! It's also free of large quantities of SUGAR, FAT & SALT ! There are many things that he says that stand out to me, but the statement that stood out most was, "Poor women that cook are healthier than wealthy women that don't". Interesting.
People claim that shopping at Whole Foods is so expensive. So in theory, only the wealthy would shop there. I don't think that this is true. It all boils down to what you are buying. I actually save money shopping at Whole Foods vs. shopping at the local main stream grocers. Sadly, convenience is what shoppers are aiming for and that wins above all when families are making choices about what to eat.
For example, chicken nuggets don't have to come in a package with instructions on the side of the package. Buy some organic chicken breast and cut it into chunks, bread it and bake it! Super easy, and super good! My kids love them!
In recent years I have done a lot of research about what foods I am eating and what they consist of. I try to eat as clean as possible. Don't get me wrong, I am not a goody two shoes that eats exclusively organic, nor have I 100% stopped eating fast food or going out to eat, but I have incorporated as much organic food into my families diet as possible, and avoid eating out as much as possible. I buy minimal amounts of processed foods because I don't want them for my kids to eat. That is what they would exclusively pick over all other healthy options, like a banana or an apple!
Brian and I are so spoiled by home cooking that we find restaurant food, all too often, to be pretty terrible. We are over and over very disappointed in our meals at restaurants. We avoid chain restaurants....they are the worst! Where we prefer to indulge is small, locally owned restaurants. You usually find pretty tasty dishes, and can even sometimes find organic and locally grown foods on the menu!
I hope you watched the entire video, and got something out of it. It's long, but worth your time! I hope I don't sound too preachy or make you feel like I am forcing my thoughts upon you. All I care to do is spread the idea of thinking about what you are eating, and to encourage everyone to make better choices. It is not out of reach. It can be done on a budget. We do it!
I made homemade enchiladas tonight. Super easy, super delicious! All ingredients were organic except for the diced chilies. Even my cream of mushroom soup was organic! Try it out sometime. They are Brian's favorite enchiladas!
